Fighting forest fires is a well-known activity, especially during the summer period, when technical and operational resources are heavily engaged in controlling and extinguishing fires.

Along railway lines and within railway structures, fires could develop due to internal or external events to the railway structure. The spread of fires along the railway line or railway infrastructure generates significant inconveniences every year, disrupting the regularity and safety of railway operations.

For these reasons, preventive treatments with suitable products have proven to be strategic to protect the infrastructure in order not to compromise the continuity and efficiency of railway activity.

The fire-fighting convoy used is equipped with one TDC500 locomotive for towing, featuring a computerized system capable of recognizing railway sections/areas subject to environmental protection, such as watercourses, reservoirs, wells, etc.; two flatbed cars with four tanks with recycling and mixing systems with a total capacity of 65,000 liters; and one flatbed car dedicated to spreading the fire retardant mixture.

The flatbed car dedicated to spreading the fire retardant mixture with fire-fighting equipment is the "heart" of the system and ensures the correct application of the mixture in the required doses and quantities.

The product used for experimentation is widely employed in fighting forest fires. It is a fire retardant, meaning a product capable of reducing the flammability of a material or delaying the spread of flames along its surface. After preparing the seedbed, a stabilizing mixture and the base substrate are spread using specific high-capacity, high-pressure equipment and suitable nozzles. This is followed by the application, using the same methodology, of a mixture of herbaceous and/or shrub seeds, or both, which will, with their root systems, stabilize the intervention area and make it less susceptible to erosion and landslides caused by weather events and inherent to the intervention area.
